System image backup failed in Windows 8?

It is a good start to back system files up in computer maintenance. However, you cannot create a system image backup sometimes due to lots of factors. For instance, backing up system to USB flash drive via Windows backup utility is unavailable because it will alert you “the drive is not a valid backup location”. Back to the topic, some Windows 8 users report that after upgrading to Windows 8.1, they cannot successfully create a system image using Windows built-in image tool. An error message reads “The backup failed. There is not enough space to create the volume shadow copy on the storage location. … (0x80780119)” pops up and ends up the backup process.

If it is true that the destination device is out of space, backing up system to larger storage will solve this issue. Nevertheless, most users find that the said storage location actually has plenty of free space for storing. How come? In fact, this error has been confirmed as a bug in Windows 8 system backup and the “not enough space” is not refer to storage device but the backed up volume. Following part will illustrate more.

The backup failed

How to fix Windows 8 system image backup failed?

In general, you can first try disabling WinRE temporarily when backing up system in Windows 8/8.1. Right click the Start button and select Command Prompt (Admin) to open command prompt window. Input reagentc /disable and press Enter. Now run the system image backup function to see if it works. You can type reagentc /enable to enable WinRE later after backup.

If this won’t work, it must be the problem of “minimum required disk space for shadow copy creation”. Shadow copy in Windows backup utility will definitely take up some space, so check if all select-to-backup volumes have enough free space. Normally, if the volume is less than 500MB, the minimum free space required shadow copy creation is 50MB. If the volume is more than 500MB, the minimum free space is 320MB. And in most cases, it would be the Recovery partition that does not have 50MB free space.

To solve this problem, you need to enlarge the Recovery partition first using third party partitioning software say AOMEI Partition Assistant and run the system image backup. Launch said software, shrink any partition that has redundant space to generate unallocated space and then merge it via “Merge Partitions” feature to enlarge Recovery partition. It is easy yet may be time consuming.

Alternatively, you can give AOMEI Backupper Professional a shot on creating Windows 8 system image backup. As long as the destination drive is at least larger than used part of selected partitions, you won’t encounter the “Windows 8 system image backup failed due to not enough disk space” issue. Download it freely and have a try.
