Windows 10 backup shows 0 bytes

It has been several years since Microsoft officially released Windows 10. With the constant efforts of Microsoft, Windows 10 has been optimized gradually. Therefore, more and more computer users give up old operating system and upgrade to Windows 10.

During the daily usage of our computers, we should develop a habit of making backups to prevent data loss. Windows 10 provides users with built-in backup and restore tools—Backup and Restore (Windows 7) and File History. Powerful as the tools are, some users are confronted with Windows Image Backup shows 0 bytes or Windows 10 File History shows size of backup 0 bytes.

Backup 0 Bytes

This problem is mainly caused by two possible reasons, namely incomplete system files and bad sectors. You can easily resolve this problem with 2 effective ways in the following. Also, you can use another backup software to protect your system or data with more helpful features.

How to fix Windows 10 backup 0 bytes effectively

When you find Windows Image Backup shows 0 bytes or File History backup shows 0 bytes, try the following solutions according to your situation.

Repair Windows 10 backup 0 bytes with system file checker

If your problem is caused by incomplete system files, you can fix it as described below:

1. Hit Windows Key + X on your keyboard, and select Command Prompt (Admin) from the menu.

2. Type sfc /scannow (note the space between “sfc” and “/”) to verify and repair the OS and press Enter.

3. Type exit and press Enter to exit Command Prompt.

SFC

Note:
When the scanning process is finished, you may get following messages:
• Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them.
• Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

The problem of finding the size of backup 0 bytes in Windows 10 can be solved if you get message 1. However, for message 2, check second cause.

Repair Windows 10 backup shows 0 bytes with chkdsk

If there are bad sectors on system disk, it will lead to Windows 10 improper backup at target location. Fix the issue following steps below:

1. Hit Windows Key + X on your keyboard, and select Command Prompt (Admin) from the menu.

2. Type chkdsk c: /f /r /x (note the space before each slash) and press Enter.

3. For the target drive is a boot disk, the system will ask you if you’d like to run the command before the next boot. Type y and press Enter.

4. Type exit and press Enter to exit Command Prompt.

5. Restart the computer and the chkdsk command will run before the operating system loads.

CHKDSK

Notes:
• The meaning of the parameters used: “/f” tells chkdsk to fix any errors it finds; “/r” tells it to locate the bad sectors on the drive and recover readable information; “/x” forces the drive to dismount before the process starts.
• Not all bad sectors can be recovered with “/r”, so it’s necessary for you to build schedule backups.
