Why clone SSD to HDD in Windows 10?

In most instances, users would like to clone HDD to SSD to gain better performance, like clone HDD to Kingston SSD. Why would people clone SSD drive to hard drive in return? Actually, this is quite helpful in following situations.

  • Get larger disk capacity. If you stored a lot of stuff including the operating system as well as all applications on a small SSD, to get enough space, you have to either clone SSD to new SSD or clone it to larger HDD. As everyone knows, HDD is cheaper than SSD when it comes to the same capacity.

  • Prolong disk’s lifespan. HDD has no limitation of reading and writing times, which makes it lasting longer than SSD.

  • Easier to recover lost data. Due to different hard disk structure, it is easier to recover data from HDD than from SSD. If you are not familiar with the new operating system Windows 10 and afraid that you might lose crucial files by mistake, cloning to HDD could be one wise choice.

  • Clone for data backup. You can backup crucial files to external hard drive for extra layer protection, so can you protect data by cloning SSD to HDD in Windows 10.

What Windows 10 cloning software should you use?

No matter in Windows 10 or in Windows 7/8, it is hard for you to perform cloning using its snap-in utilities. Therefore, you might as well turn to those reliable cloning software to clone SSD to HDD. AOMEI Backupper Standard is such a secure, reliable and free cloning software that allows you to clone SSD to HDD partition/disk without reinstalling in Windows 10 (both 32 bit and 64 bit).

This software offers you two significant cloning features, Intelligent Clone and Sector by Sector Clone. By default, it will clone only used part from SSD to HDD, which is called Intelligent Clone. That is an effective method to clone larger drive to smaller drive. If clone disk with Sector by Sector method, the destination disk (HDD in this article) must be equal to or larger than the source disk (SSD here). The method is able to recover lost or formatted partition on the source disk to the destination. Just choose the suitable one for yourself.

It is not a trouble if there are bad sectors on SSD because AOMEI Backupper supports to clone hard drive with bad sectors. You can clone only a certain partition to HDD partition with Partition Clone as well. Now, download it and have a try.

Step 5. Shut down your computer after completing. You can change boot priority to the cloned HDD in BIOS to boot off Windows 10. Yet, it is suggested to remove source disk to perform the boot test.

  • You might find unallocated space on your hard drive after this cloning process. Don’t worry, you can fully make use of those unallocated space by referring to unallocated space after cloning.
  • You are allowed to edit the partitions on the HDD by clicking Edit partitions on the destination disk. It will be unavailable if you check Sector by sector clone box.
  • If you clone SSD to SSD in Windows 10, please check Align partition to optimize for SSD to improve reading and writing speed.

  • If you want to clone system drive only from SSD to HDD, please upgrade to the advanced version AOMEI Backupper Professional and perform System Clone.

  • Above steps also apply to clone SSD to HDD in Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows XP.

Cloning SSD to HDD in Windows 10 problems

Some users complained that the cloned hard drive won’t boot after cloning. In general, except for the boot order problem, you should also concern about the boot mode issue. To be specific, if you clone GPT to MBR disk, you’d have to change UEFI to Legacy in Startup, and vice versa.

If you have other problems on booting Windows 10 from cloned drive, please refer to cloned Windows 10 won’t boot for more solutions.
