How to backup and restore UEFI based system drive successfully? UEFI supports bootable GPT hard drive, larger capacity more than 2TB. AOMEI Backupper will help to realize the backup and restore for UEFI disk.

About UEFI

After the release of Windows 7, UEFI Boot has finally been supported by Microsoft in desktop systems. If an operating system can be installed on a GPT hard drive, then it means this very computer supports UEFI Boot. To tell if the operating system has been installed on a GPT hard drive successfully or not, we can use Windows Disk Management to identify.

Open the Run dialog box with the shortcut Win + R, and type in "diskmgmt.msc" and press Enter to open Disk Management in Windows 10/8/7. Then right click on the system disk.

Convert to MBR

If we can find "Convert to MBR Disk" option available in the menu list, then the system has been installed on the GPT disk already, which also means this computer supports UEFI Boot. However, if the computer does not support UEFI Boot, we will see "Convert to GPT disk" in the drop-down menu instead.

Nowadays UEFI Boot is supported by both Windows 10/8/8.1 and 64 bit of Windows 7. It also has been widely adopted by laptop manufacturers and Server platform. On the other hand, most of the backup tools now on the market are still not 100% compatible with UEFI Boot while AOMEI Backupper has already realized the perfect support for it.

How to Backup System Drive Based on UEFI Boot?

Creating a system image backup based on UEFI boot is exactly the same as making a backup for system drive base on BIOS Boot, because AOMEI Backupper has full support for UEFI boot system.

How to Restore System Drive Based on UEFI Boot?

The First Case:

If your system is UEFI boot mode, and support for creating a Windows PE bootable media, you can directly use AOMEI Backupper to restore system drive, and AOMEI Backupper will prompt you to restart the computer and enter into Restart Mode to complete the restore operation.

The Second Case:

If your system environment does not support to create Windows PE bootable media,AOMEI Backupper will use the Linux bootable media to realize the restore operation under Restart Mode, then during restoring system drive, you might receive the message below:

"UEFI Restore Note: your system is UEFI boot (not MBR boot), so you need to use AOMEI’s bootable media to realize the restore operation. Go to Utilities -> Create Bootable Media and make a bootable CD or USB media, and then use the bootable media to boot your computer to complete the restore task."

To solve this problem, you need to use AOMEI Backupper to create a Linux bootable CD or create a Windows PE bootable CD based on Legacy Boot Mode first. You can go to Utilities -> Create Bootable Media to create it.

Change BIOS boot mode and Restore System Drive

After the bootable CD is created, boot your computer from it. Here you need to change the BIOS boot mode from UEFI to Legacy Boot Mode like in the screenshot below (you may also learn how to change the setting by referring to the manual of your motherboard).

Legacy UEFI Boot

After the boot mode has been changed in BIOS interface, we can boot the computer from CD or USB flash drive. Besides, we can restore system drive that based on UEFI boot by running AOMEI Backupper built in the bootable CD or USB flash drive.

Finally, click Restore button on the left side in the main interface of AOMEI Backupper, select the system backup image by clicking on "Path: Browse a path to select an image file and restore data from the file". Then follow the instructions to complete the system restore process.
