In this article, you will learn what is continuous data protection and how to set continuous backup to protect your most valuable data.

What is continuous data protection?

Continuous data protection (CDP), is also called real-time backup or continuous backup. It backups computer data by automatically saving a copy of every change made to that data. If anything bad happens to your computer, it enables data recovery back to any point in time.

Continuous backup is regarded as an advanced pre-set time backup. The computer data will be saved automatically once there is a change made to it. Every copy of changes is guaranteed to be captured in real-time.

Is continuous data protection necessary?

Some people may ask: I already have a data backup or set up a scheme to create a data backup, is it still necessary to do continuous backup? The answer is of course yes.

As we all know that backup is the most important thing for protecting data. However, data will be changed because of adding/deleting/changing files in some way. And it may be troublesome to backup new data again once data changes.

Of course, pre-set time intervals like one hour, daily, weekly backup may save you a lot of time and efforts. However, there are still some situations you cannot control.

Have you ever experienced the horror of data loss? For example, when you are writing an important report or making a PPT, suddenly power is down, and you do not save your document in time. Very often, pre-set time backup is not working at that moment.

You may have spent hours working on important documents and it is lost. If you have set CDP, data loss is not a problem anymore.

Therefore, for the sake of data protection, you should setup continuous data protection.

Continuous data protection software

It is a pity that Windows does not have this feature with its built-in tool. Therefore, you should find a continuous backup software. AOMEI Backupper Standard is a professional data backup software. Its real-time sync feature allows you to protect your data automatically. It is completely free to use.

AOMEI Backupper Standard provides "File Sync" feature to let you backup data and files in real-time without any cost. AOMEI Backupper could detect the changed files and synchronize the new added, modified or deleted files from the source to destination path automatically.

To some extent, real-time sync requires less space on disk than traditional backup. After that first snapshot, or initial replica, is complete, a backup manager continuously monitors changes to the data. Then, when you run a backup, only the files or blocks where information has changed will be saved.

Also, you can prevent data loss of current work with real-time sync feature.

How to set continuous backup to protect your most valuable data

Let’s see the detailed steps on how to set real time backup to protect your most valuable data.

AOMEI Backupper Standard is an excellent continuous data protection application, with the help of it, you can automatically protect your data with just a few clicks.

With real-time sync by AOMEI Backupper, AOMEI Backupper could detect the changed files and synchronize the new added, modified or deleted files from the source to destination path automatically.

When data is written to disk, it is also written to a second location, usually an external USB drive, a NAS or another computer over the network. You will always have a mirror copy of all your files.

Besides real-time sync, you can also do incremental and differential backup. And it supports Windows 10, 8/8.1, 7, XP and Vista.
