How to Restore Files from Backup in Windows 10/8/7?

Windows built-in tool can help you restore files from backup without effort when you mistakenly delete files or edit a file. But it’s not perfect. In this article, I will show you the alternative way.

When to restore files from backup?

With the development of the computer network, data transmission, data storage and data exchange become a common phenomenon. During the process, your data may be damaged or corrupted.

Besides, you may delete important files, change the files incorrectly, or virus attacks computer, even some natural disasters cause files damage. 

Whether data damaged or mistakenly deleted, you can restore files from backup in Windows 10/8/7 as long as you have a backup in hand.

How to restore files from backup in Windows 10/8/7?

Restore files using File History

File history, a file backup software, which is included in Windows 10/8.1/8. You can use it to backup files on your computer. If you want to restore files to a previous version or recover the deleted files, a backup is needed.

To restore files from Windows 10 file history backup:

Step 1. You can type restore files in the search box, and then select Restore your files with file history.

Step 2. Select the file you want to restore.

Step 3. Click the green restore button to restore the selected files. If you want to restore your files to a different location, you can click Settings and Restore to option to select a new path.

Note: If you want to restore files to a previous version, you can click the arrow at the left or right to find the version you want. Or you can click Home and select an item, then click History to show its previous version.

History

File history can protect your files. But it’s not perfect. Sometimes, you will find File History not working as it should. For example: when you use File History to backup files and it is apparently running with "File History is saving copies of your files", however, there is still no file on your backup drive in a few days.

Besides, File history does not support Windows 7. Thus, you cannot use File History to backup file. But, Microsoft offers you another tool called Backup and Restore. You can use it to backup and restore your files.

Backup and Restore was introduced in Windows 7. And it is included in Windows 8 and later version. The main aim is to create a system image backup for your computer. But you still can use it to backup your files.

To restore files with Backup and Restore:

Step 1. Type restore files in the search box, and then select restore data, files or computer from backup.

Step 2. Click Restore my files or Restore all users' file.

Step 3. Select files you want to restore, and then click Next. In this window, you have three options, including Search, Browse for filesBrowse for folders. You can use one of them to find your files and restore to its latest version.

Note: If you want to see an individual file in a folder, you should select Browse for files instead of Browse for folders. If you select Browse for folders, you cannot see an individual file in any folder.

Step 4. Select the location to restore your files. You can save it to the original location. Also, you can click Browse under in the following location and specify a location for your files.

Step 5. Click Restore to start the pending operation.

Backup and Restore can protect your files too. But, it still has limitation. It does not support differential backup. And it does not encrypt and compress your backup.

Create a backup for your computer
