What is SSD disk?

To begin, SSD (Solid State Drive) is a storage disk made by solid-state electronic storage chip. Unlike HDD (hard disk drive), SSD has no moving parts, the data are stored on the memory chips (consists of flash chip and Dynamic Random Access Memory(DRAM) chip). So, the data on the SSD can be read and written faster than HDD.

And this also makes it more durable and reliable, quieter and cooler, etc. In view of its advantages, the price is relatively expensive than HDD and some users would like to get one smaller SSD. And the price is higher if the SSD disk has better performance. If you create SSD backup image to new SSD with lower capacity, the system image restore may fail.

Why need SSD backup image?

SSD backup image is a direct copy of the entire drive and it is compressed into a single file for space conservation. It includes the operating system, system drivers, installed programs, personal data, etc, so you can easily restore the entire image to new drive (HDD or SSD) or retrieve individual files from image.

For example, with a disk image, you can restore computer to an earlier date in a disaster, you can upgrade your old hard disk to a new one to solve the problem of low running speed, and you can restore missing files due to system crash or other disk problems.

Anyway, an SSD backup image is useful for data protection and disaster recovery, and next, I’ll show you introduce you to best Windows 10 image backup software and how to create SSD backup image with it.

Best Windows 10 image backup software

AOMEI Backup Standard is one of the best Windows 10 image backup software and it also works for Windows 11/8.1/8/7/XP/Vista. With it, you can not only create SSD image backup, but also clone disk image for quick recovery.

The previous one is a little complex but it focuses on continuous data protection. If long-term data security is more important to you, try imaging and enjoy the following advantages.

It allows you to backup system, disk, partition or individual files.
It supports daily, weekly, monthly schedule backup, so you can keep all the changes in a scheduled task.
It minimizes the disk space you will use with incremental backup, normal compression, and automatic splitting. And all of them are default features, you don't make an extra effort.
It is capable of creating bootable USB or CD/DVD to boot computer in a disater and then get your files or system back quickly.

And all the operations are based on an easy-to-use interface, so all users can understand it easily and quickly. Please download it to have a try!

Schedule Backup: It allows you to backup system on a regular basis, and you have 3 totally free options, including daily, weekly, monthly. Also, you can use Event Triggers, USB plug in on the professional version.
Backup Scheme: It has 3 backup methods (full/incremental/differential) and the last two options backup only changed files. Also, you can automatically delete old backup images if you enable automatic backup cleanup. Most features in it are only available on the  professional version.

Start Backup

And now you can easily restore Windows 10 image to new hard drive or SSD if something bad happens. And this software backup only used sectors of SSD disk, thus you don't need to worry about system image restore failed error due to insufficient space.

The overall restore steps is as follow:

  • Switch the Restore tab and choose Select Task
  • Select disk backup in the following window and click Next. If you don't see previous created image, click Back and choose Select Image Files to manually locate your image.

Select Backup Image

  • Select "Restore the entire disk" and click Next.
  • Select the destination disk to receive backup image. Then, click Next.
  • Tick "SSD Alignment" to accelerate the reading and writing speed. Then, click Start Restore to restore Windows image to new hard drive.

If the computer you want to restore is not bootable, you need to create a bootable USB or CD/DVD in advance. If you don't have any storage device, try to create a recovery environment in Windows 10 (supported by professional version). And you can access it easily at the system startup every time.

Create Bootable USB

Also, you could use an easier way to image SSD to new one, we call it cloning and you need the help of SSD cloning freeware. It's especially useful for instant recovery or hard drive upgrade. After cloning, you can directly boot from it without restoring image.
